Tips: Taking a Grand Canyon Airplane Tour During the Christmas Holiday Season!

Keith Recommends:

The Christmas holiday season is nearly here and if you're planning to take a Grand Canyon airplane tour it's best to get it now because there are a lot of Las Vegas travelers who have it at the top of their wish list this winter.

The flight that's getting the most attention is the one that goes to the South Rim of the National Park in 60 minutes (this is phenomenal when you compare it to the 5.5 hours it takes to drive there!) and includes 2.5 hours inside the Park.

Many ask "how big is the airplane" because they are under the impression that it's a tiny aircraft. The fact is these are large airplanes that can comfortably seat up to 19 adult passengers. Further, they are completely outfitted for sightseeing.

Christmas Day

Unlike helicopter tours, Las Vegas airplane tours will be flying on Christmas Day. Do be aware that flights that day are limited. Relatedly, if you're first choice is a helicopter tour and its sold out (happens often) then the airplane is your ticket because they seat more people.

Flights take off from several airstrips in the Las Vegas area. If you fly from a location near The Strip, you'll pay more. The cheapest departure point is Boulder City, which is located just 25 minutes from Las Vegas (all tour operators include free shuttle service in their packages).

So far, I've shared with you information about the South Rim. The other hot destination is the West Rim, which is just 120 miles from Las Vegas and takes about 25 minutes to reach by air. I'm sure many are familiar with the West Rim but if not it's the location of the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

The Skywalk, which also is called the glass bridge, is one of Las Vegas' most interesting outdoor attractions. It's basically comprised of glass panels that cost $250,000 each. When you join them together, you get a pathway that lets you walk 70 feet past the edge!

West Rim

The other West Rim airplane tours travlers are really going for is the flight with optional Skywalk. I believe this trip is hot because some travlers aren't sure or prepared to do the Skywalk until they actually see it. If a decision is made to go for it, tickets can be purchased on-site.

I mentioned at the top of the article that Grand Canyon air tours are popular during the Christmas season. Heed that advice by pre-booking your trip. How many days in advance are optimal? If it were summer, I'd say book it a week in advance but during winter you can get away with three days before you desired date of departure.

Moreover, avoid booking your plane ride within 24 hours of departure. This is because the price will be higher and/or the trip will be sold out. I've come across too many travelers under the impression that they can save money by purchasing the tour once they arrive in Las Vegas only to pay a premium to get airborne. Save yourself the agony -- book early and online.

Conclusion

I hope this article gave you a better idea of how to purchase an airplane tour to the canyon during the holiday season. If there's one thing that bears repeating, get your trip ahead of time and online. That nearly assures you'll get the best price. But more importantly, it means you'll see the National Park on the day/time you want.
